Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How Does Your Garden Grow? That’s the title for my newest fabric collection for Modern Yardage. And I am so excited by this one! This is how the idea for this collection came about.
I LOVE Pinterest. Do you? I used to rip up magazine and catalogs for inspiration, but I hated to create folders and files for all of the clippings and organize them…only to have my kitties knock them on the floor. One day I was Pinning folk art (one of my faves!) and I came across the Polish paper cutting art called wycinanki. I had never heard of it before, and I am half Polish! I started to draw my version of these floral shapes. I am fascinated that people actually cut them out so symmetrically with paper, scissors, and blades . Crazy! So I decided to do mine all on Adobe Illustrator. So perfect, each little “paper” layer becomes a digital one, all stacked up like a layer cake. These are some of my sketches with the vector results to the right. I redraw everything using scans of my sketches and a Cintiq tablet.
In my progression at repeat pattern making, I’ve come up with this weirdo method where I plop my main elements into the repeat box, then I’ll print it out and sketch in the rest on paper. I scan it back in and redraw it all in vector. This really works for me, as I can’t “think” creatively on the computer. I am at my best working on paper.
