The last of my summer school projects from The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design was by far my favorite!

Intricate Chaos!

Stylesight/WGSN trend agency provided the trend reports that we used as inspiration for our designs.

I did a lot of drawings for this one. I wanted to do a henna-inspired type of pattern. I love henna style designs, check out my Pinterest board with lots of great inspiration.

I ended up sketching in pencil, scanning, and “inking” in Corel Painter. Painter has a ton of different brushes, so I used a “mechanical pencil” in black. It was just like drawing on paper with a Sharpie.

Above picture is arranging the pattern into the repeat.

Finished pattern and mock up! I mocked it up as wallpaper too just to play 🙂

These were not my fave colors (we were working off of a trend report and had suggested colors to use).

So…I recolored it to be a bit more “me”!

Then…I just HAD to draw a mandala design to go with it. Pencil sketch.

Again, I “inked” it in Corel Painter. This kind of stuff relaxes me. Plus, you can rotate the art board so it’s super easy to draw with.et voila!

I’m absolutely in love with this combo!
